Plenary meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) UNESCO – Paris Chapter was held on 6 December 2021

The plenary meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) UNESCO – Paris Chapter was held on December 6, 2021 under the chairmanship of Elman Abdullayev, Permanent Delegate of the Republic of Azerbaijan to UNESCO. The Permanent Delegates of the NAM Member States to UNESCO, Observers, representatives of the UNESCO Secretariat, President of the 41st session of the UNESCO General Conference, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of the Federative Republic of Brazil H.E. Mr. Santiago Irazabal Mourão and Secretary of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Mr. Timothy Curtis attended the meeting.

Ambassador Abdullayev briefed the participants about the activities of the NAM Azerbaijani Chairmanship, including establishment of NAM Youth Network and Parliamentary Network of the NAM, organizing High-Level Commemorative Meeting to mark the 60th anniversary of the First Conference of Non-Aligned Movement, initiating the adoption of UN General Assembly resolution "Ensuring equal, affordable, timely and universal access to vaccines against COVID-19", i etc.

President of the General Conference Mr. Mourão talked about the principal role of the NAM at the international arena, challenges in the fields of education, illiteracy, preservation of cultural heritage, illicit trafficking of the cultural properties, fake news and hate speech as well as significance of the balanced approach and mutual dialogue to overcome all obstacles.

Mr. Timothy Curtis enlightened about the upcoming 16th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

At the end of the plenary meeting, the candidatures of NAM Member States were discussed and the importance of mutual support as a further of manifestation of solidarity of the Movement was emphasized.
